As one would expect from KitchenAid, the toaster is well constructed and performs well. I only have two minor complaints: first, the display doesn't come on until you push down the bread. It's only after the toasting cycle has started that you can adjust the browning level, set the cycle to bagel/defrost, etc. That's just counterintuitive. Second, the spring mechanism is very sensitive. I often have to try two or three times to get the bread to stay down and start the toasting cycle. It does make great toast :).

I have been using the Zojirushi Mini bread baker for a couple of years, and it has served me well. I prefer traditional long loaves (the Mini makes tall loaves) so I had been mostly using the dough cycle, then shaping the loaf for a second rise in a standard bread pan, then baking in the oven. This works well, but ties me to the house for several hours. So I opted for the Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme which bakes excellent bread -- just put in the ingredients, press the start button, and beautiful bread is ready in about 4 hours (2 hours if you use rapid rise yeast and the quick cycle). It's easy to use and clean (don't put the bread pan in the dishwasher, but the non-stick interior rinses easily). The basic recipes result in a large loaf with slices that peek out over the top of the toaster; reducing the recipe amounts by 25% results in the perfect loaf for me. This is easily the best home bread maker on the market -- expensive but worth the price and the counter space.

As you'd expect from Kitchenaid, this product is well made. It's heavy enough that large jobs like kneading bread dough won't send it creeping along the counter. The ample feed tube handles all but the fattest potatoes. The three push button contols (pulse/on/off) couldn't be simpler and the machine is surprisingly quiet. The four-cup work bowl insert is handy for smaller jobs if you don't already have a separate mini-prep processor. Plus it comes with a plastic box to store the accessories -- no more searching high and low for the plastic dough blade or slicing disks.
