Maybe I'm not yogurt-capable

I bought this with the best of intentions. I followed the directions it came with, and I got sour milk, not yogurt. Then I tried a recipe I got from a friend. Again, I met with failure. I tried various starters and methods, different fat levels, nothing seemed to work.
I'll stick to baking, and buy my yogurt.

Not old-fashioned at all!

My 4-year-old niece loves soft-boiled eggs. However, only when served in an egg cup. Nice egg cups are hard to find, and many are oddly decorated or easily broken. These are sturdy, and so nice and simple you can use them everyday, or on a beautifully set breakfast table. Love them.

I'm always baking double and triple batches of baked goods for bake sales, potlucks, or to give away at the holidays. This mixer does it all; I am so glad I bought one! I only wish it came in all the colors the lesser models do.

Great for cooking, not necessarily for cleaning.

A friend who shall remain nameless laughed when I first brought these kabob baskets on a camping trip. He was no longer laughing when my food was all successfully prepped, cooked and served without any pieces dropping into the fire or dirt.
However, if you use any type of glaze or baste, be prepared to scrub it off, or be soaking these for a bit. Next summer I'm going to try spraying them with non-stick spray first.

Never do the elbow-flip again!

I always laughed at my mother for having one of these. Now, I think they are great! When you're in the middle of kneading bread dough, or stirring a hot batch of sugar, you don't want to try flipping back to the right page!
It doesn't work if you need to flip the page to get to the end of a recipe, don't have lots of counter space, or have oversize cookbooks. But for a standard recipe like those shown in the example picture, it can't be beat. Now if they would just find a way to make it hang from the upper cabinets, I'd give it five stars!

My mother has used her original 1975 edition of the Joy of Cooking religiously. When the anniversary edition came out, she decided to "upgrade" for the modern versions of her favorite recipes, and planned to give me her old one. Within one week she asked for her original back, and handed me the new one. I love both!!
The new one allows for convection cooking, the use of the microwave, etc. It drops the lard, thank goodness, and has lots of delicious veggie dishes. I love the section that explains the terminology and tools.
Thank you, Irma Rombauer!!!

A sturdy set of tongs

I was given a pair of Edlund tongs by a friend after I bought a deep-fryer. I think they are great. I love that they lock for easier storage, and the scalloped edges are great for gripping foods, but allowing the oil to drip off. My one regret is that if you use them over and over (as I have when I'm frying a large quantity for a buffet) the handles get hot! But they're easy enough to use with a mitt or potholder if necessary.

I have spatulas from 3 different companies at the moment. My Le Creuset spatula is the oldest and still the best. The others were gifts, otherwise they would all be Le Creuset. It's never melted, broken, stained or gotten "icky". The handle pulls out and you can toss the head in the dishwasher. Much easier to sanitize than those other spatulas!

I bought a Waring fryer for one specific event, my grandmother's 80th birthday party. My mother and I fried shrimp for almost 2 hours straight, and it never gave up, kept a nice hot temperature, and the shrimp came out wonderfully. My only concern was that the sides did get quite hot, so be careful not to brush up against it while cooking.
The Waring's next test will be my grandmother's homemade donut recipe!

A pure taste of coffee

I used to work for a coffee roaster. When a new blend or bean type was being sampled, the first taste was always brewed in a Bodum french press. They are well-made, classy, and using one allows you to taste the various flavors that coffee can produce.
At home I pair this with the Bodum milk frother to make cafe au lait after dinner. C'est magnifique!
