Quality Measuring Cups

These cups are typical All-Clad quality. The actual bowls are heavy, stainless, and the handles are miniaturized versions of the handles found on full size AC pots and pans. Even with the heavy handles they balance themselves flat on the countertop with nothing in them, and they're dishwasher safe - and are the one AC product that I dont feel bad about throwing in the dishwasher. Also, being that they're real stainless, I have successfully used them for heating butter and other liquids on the stove (although I wouldn't necessarily condone it) But most importantly, theyre beautiful and match my full size pots and pans, so they look great.

Best Meat Tenderizer

This meat tenderizer is an excellent product that both saves time and energy. It can be used on a party's worth of meat and afterwards there's no fatigue on the user because its the blades that do all the work instead of having to swing a heavy hammer. While it works amazingly well with marinades, it works even better with a vacuum marinator. Its extremely sharp so care is required when cleaning it, but its an excellent, and inventive product that accomplishes its purpose with perfection.

I have had a few of these in different sizes for years and I could not be happier. They maintain their sharpness and they are useful for zesting and grating of all types. My only complaint is that the plastic guard they come with (which works well) is a bit of a hassle to slide back on if its fully taken off, but that can be avoided by not fully sliding it off or a slight bit of patience. As a side note, these are so well made that I have used a kitchen specific zester as a rasp in my woodshop and it maintained its sharpness. Absolutely amazing engineering.

This is a comfortable peeler which feels good in hand. Its beefy grip is ergonomic and soft and feels good even after a lot of peeling. While sharp, I personally think my Zyliss peeler is sharper, but for the price, you cant go wrong with the OXO.

Best Waffle Maker Ever

I love waffles, and my main complaint in life has mostly been that its near impossible to enjoy waffles with other people, especially proper Belgian waffles, because you can usually only make one at a time. This waffle maker allows for two, which is perfect because allows the owner to eat waffles with a partner. The temperature control is excellent, and between the timer, the light over the power button, and the temperature gage on top, its nearly impossible to burn a waffle. The actual maker weighs a lot, but its the feel of industrial quality - the handles are oversized, the buttons are beefy and the timer knob clicks with conviction like something you'd expect to find on a nuclear submarine. The flip action insures that waffles are even and fluffy on both sides. The maker heats extremely quickly and can make 2 waffles in 3-4 minutes. There is even a nice waffle mix runoff reservoir around the waffle form to minimize dripping. The top and bottom are well insulated and really never get too hot to touch, although i wouldn't recommend it. The only fault in this amazing apparatus is its size, but thats easily excusable because of the quality breakfasts it makes.

I dont know how i ever lived without this product, but it works exactly as advertised. Whenever i deal with something with a pungent odor in the kitchen, i simply wash my hands with this afterwards and the smell is miraculously gone. I originally had a soap shaped bar, but purchased this one for the pointed tip nail cleaner on it. It works great and is so inexpensive, no home should be without it.

Rosle Garlic Press : The cut of garlic influences its flavor. Crush garlic to release more of its aromatic oils than simply chopping or slicing it. Minced garlic has a volatile flavor that disperses quickly. Press garlic for a rich, aromatic paste. Lever system requires minimum pressure for processing even unpeeled cloves. Convenient hanging loop. Dishwasher-safe. 8"L

Best Garlic Press

This garlic press is an absolutely outstanding piece of engineering. It allows for a ton of leverage which crushes garlic easily and quickly - even unpeeled garlic is easily pressed and the skin stays inside the apparatus. It easily flips open, and the press screen flips back for easy cleaning - just wipe across it and all of the leftovers just clean right off. Like other Rosle kitchen tools, it has a hanging hook, which is convenient, but the press will rest in an open position, not the "V" like pictures above - if you hanging rack is low this might be a problem, but personally i just let the press hang completely vertically and its about the length of a hanging ladle. Its put together really well and theres no lateral flex so it feels good when in use. If you can stomach $40+ for a garlic press, its well worth every penny.

Excellent Can Opener

This can opener is great, especially if you have children. There are no sharp parts on the opener and it leaves no sharp edges on the can. The way in which it cuts (through the bolster on the edge on the top of the can) allows the can to be "resealed" within reason - I wouldn't use it for long term storage. Its a well made product, that feels solid in hand, no parts jiggle or make noise, even the plastic top feels good. The only complaint that i can think of is that for opening things like canned tuna or other things that need to be drained, it is more convenient to have a classic sharp edged can opener - the safety can opener doesn't create a kerf between the top and can (thus why its re-sealable) so its hard to drain liquid out while keeping the solids in. However, with enough patience this can be overcome.

Decent Mezzaluna

The steel on this mezzaluna is high quality Wusthof steel, which holds an edge well and comes sharp from the factory, but the handle feels cheap. Its made of a textured plastic, which provides good grip, but its still cheap plastic and not exactly what one might call ergonomic. Thats not to say it's uncomfortable, but its definitely not the first knife i would want to reach for in my kitchen - I would rate it pretty far down the list. There are definitely nicer, more ergonomic mezzalunas out there, and many of them allow you more leverage when chopping.

Decent Mezzaluna set
PostedJanuary 18, 2009

While this set comes with a quality mincing board and the steel on the mezzaluna is nice, the set is overshadowed by the dicey quality of the mezzaluna handle. Its made of a cheap plastic that just barely flirts with being ergonomic. On the bright side, its a textured cheap plastic that allows the user to get a good grip. While its not exactly ergonomically sound, its not uncomfortable for periodic use, its just not something that I go out of my way to use in my kitchen. In all, well made, but somewhat lacking in comfort and a little pricey.
